Although it was started by the Nazi's as a way to show the "prosperity" of their nation, and then to highlight key portions of their own nation on television, the torch relay really does help bring nations together.
The IOC needs to review why there are so many protests where-ever the torch has gone this year. They aren't protesting the torch or the bearer. They're protesting the host nation's actions against a smaller NATION. In some instances people were protesting the "storm troopers" which accompanied the torch from China. People didn't want to have the elite fighting force of a communist nation paraded around their streets...

The Nazi link is an interesting one with regard to these current games. Like Germany in 1936, China is hoping to exhibit progress and stability to the world. An improvement over their past selves. Anyone with a brain is not buying it when it comes to China. They should have cancelled the silly relay, as the response just adds further illegitimacy to these upcoming games.
