Problems with Today being celebrated as Cinco de Mayo and the issues people mistake for it...
1) IT IS NOT THE DATE OF MEXICAN INDEPENDANCE - September 16 is the date of that event.
2) The 5th of May is a rememberance of the first Mexican victory over the French (Emperor Maximilian I - enthrowned 10 April, 1864 - supported by Napoleon III) and it occured in the Mexican state of Puebla. On 5 May 1864, General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguin lead the Mexican forces to victory.
3) It was a failed victory - it only delayed for less than a year the advance of the French to Mexico City. It would not be until 1867 that the French were defeated and the country returned to their own control. Too bad.
4) During the 1860s, Californians started celebrating the day as an opposition to the French rule in Mexico and a distraction to the American Civil War.
5) The day is virtually ignored in Mexico.

It is just another day created by Americans to sell something. In this case, beer. Just like how Mother's Day was created to sell more flowers. We will use any excuse to buy something in our culture of waste.
